Computer Software (SiD) Assisted Real-Time Single Sperm Selection

Mendizabal-Ruiz et al., 2022

Selecting the best individual sperm cell for injection into an egg (ICSI) is crucial for successful fertilization. Currently, this step is conducted by eye by an embryologist assessing (sometimes many) moving sperm cells under a microscope.

This study introduces SiD, an AI-powered software that analyzes how individual sperm swim and move their heads. Using advanced statistics, SiD tracks multiple movement patterns not easily discernible by the human eye and produces a real-time recommendation for the embryologist on-scren.

The study found that sperm selected using certain movement characteristics were more likely to fertilize eggs successfully and develop into high-quality embryos. This technology could help embryologists make more informed sperm selection decisions, potentially improving fertilization rates and embryo quality.
