Artificial Intelligence in the Embryology Laboratory: A Review

Dimitriadis et al., 2022

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being used in IVF laboratories to help embryologists make better decisions. This comprehensive review examines how AI analyzes images of eggs, sperm, and embryos to predict which ones are most likely to result in healthy babies, providing numerous examples of its clinical applications.

The authors describe how AI can spot subtle patterns humans might miss and is unaffected by fatigue. The technology can standardize approaches such as embryo grading across different clinics and reduce variability between embryologists.

While AI shows great promise for improving IVF success rates, the authors emphasize that it should assist rather than replace human expertise, and more research is needed to validate these tools in clinical practice.
